Brazil's central bank mandates COAF reporting for crypto transfers above $10,000

  • Resolution BCB 588 requires mandatory COAF reporting for transfers of $10,000 or more to and from self-custody wallets
  • Reporting does not require suspicion — hitting the threshold is enough, with a deadline of the next business day
  • Resolution BCB 589 requires crypto service providers to disclose client balances, custody data, proof of reserves and staking details
  • From Nov. 6, 2026, transactions with unauthorized crypto service providers will be banned
Why it matters: Brazil is tightening oversight of self-custody and crypto firms, potentially pressuring the local market and setting a precedent for other regulators.
