UK tax rules raise fears of linking Bitcoin users to their home addresses
- —From 1 January 2026, UK exchanges must collect name, date of birth, home address and tax ID for users
- —Data must be gathered for all individual users, not only those with reportable activity
- —First annual reports covering 2026 activity are due to HMRC by 31 May 2027
- —HMRC expects to recover at least £300 million in unpaid tax over five years
Why it matters: Linking public Bitcoin addresses to names and home addresses raises de-anonymisation and data-leak risks that could push users away from UK exchanges.
