EU opens 11 probes into game publishers over virtual currencies, crypto left out
- —11 CPC actions cover 10 publishers and 11 titles, including Minecraft, Candy Crush and Valorant
- —Complaints include stacked conversions, hidden euro prices and unusable leftover balances
- —March 2025 principles explicitly exclude crypto and currencies covered by the 5th AML directive
- —CPC is also reviewing loot boxes, dark patterns and purchases by minors
Why it matters: EU regulators are not yet applying consumer rules to crypto, but their approach to virtual currencies could set a template for future crypto regulation.
