Quantum-proof Bitcoin signatures would bloat transaction data 10x, Coinbase warns
- —SHRINCS stateless signature is 5,777 bytes; stateful range is 548–4,619 bytes
- —Public key is 48 bytes and the signing counter must never decrease
- —Fallback adds up to 13,080 sats in a hypothetical one-signature fee model
- —Coinbase says it holds roughly 12% of all BTC in existence
Why it matters: Moving to quantum-resistant signatures would force exchanges and custodians to redesign key management and fee accounting well before any network upgrade.
